UGC Usage Rights Explained: Durations, Pricing & Red Flags
Usage rights are where the real money in a brand deal lives, and where most creators quietly give it away. This guide covers what usage is, what each duration should cost, and the contract language that takes your video forever.
What usage rights actually are
When a brand hires you, they're buying two different things:
1. Production: you making the video. Scripting, filming, editing, delivering the file.
2. Usage: a license to use that video: reposting it, and most importantly, running it as a paid ad with your face and voice selling their product.
Usage is a rental, not a sale. Every license should name three things: how long (duration), where (platforms), and how (organic repost vs paid ads). If a contract doesn't name them, it isn't a fair deal yet. It's a blank check.
What each duration should cost
A professional structure prices usage as a percentage of your base video rate, charged on top of production. Using a $500 base rate as the example:
| Usage duration | Typical price | On a $500 base |
|---|---|---|
| 90 days | ~70% of base | $350 |
| 180 days | ~130% of base | $650 |
| 12 months | ~220% of base | $1,100 |
| Perpetual (forever) | ~400% of base | $2,000 |
Your base rate may be higher or lower. The proportions are the point. A $500 video with a year of paid usage is a $1,600 deal, not a $500 one.
Spark Ads and whitelisting are usage too
A Spark Ad (TikTok) lets the brand boost your actual post using an authorization code you generate. Whitelisting (Meta) lets them run ads through your handle from Ads Manager. Different mechanics, same rule: it's paid usage of your identity, so it's priced and time-limited like any other license.
Commonly: around 40% of base for 30 days, 90% for 90 days, and 160% for 180 days. Never hand over an open-ended Spark code or permanent whitelist access for free.
Red flags in the fine print
When the term expires, you get paid again
When a usage term lapses, the brand has to stop running your video, or renew the license. Almost nobody tracks this, which means brands keep using expired videos for free every day.
Write down the usage end date the day you sign, and follow up before it lapses with a renewal price. It's the easiest money in UGC.

What are UGC usage rights?
A license that lets a brand use your video beyond your own post: mainly running it as a paid ad. You're renting the video for a set time, on set platforms, for a set purpose. Production and usage are always priced separately.
How much should I charge for usage rights?
As a percentage of your base rate: roughly 70% for 90 days, 130% for 180 days, 220% for a year, and around 400% for perpetual. On a $500 base that's $350 / $650 / $1,100 / $2,000.
What's the difference between whitelisting and Spark Ads?
Whitelisting (Meta) lets the brand run ads through your handle in Ads Manager. A Spark Ad (TikTok) boosts your actual post with an authorization code. Both are paid usage. Price them, time-limit them.
Should I ever agree to perpetual usage?
Only at a perpetual price: around 4x your base or more. Or offer a 12-month term with a renewal instead. Never let "forever" hide inside a flat fee.
What happens when my usage term expires?
The brand must stop using the video or pay to renew. Track every deal's end date and follow up before it lapses. Renewals are the easiest money in UGC.
